Exciting Updates from Modern Parent, Celebrity Parents Are Just Like Us, and Why Moms Never Sleep (Modern Parent Roundup)
Announcing our first writing contest and invite-only community!
Hello Modern Parents!
Welcome to our weekly round-up. Every Sunday, we feature our stories of the week and pick of the week. We also share the latest science behind parenting and some entertainment.
Thank you to all the parents last week who reached out to Zhao Peng, a Ph.D. candidate at MSU’s School of Journalism. Both Modern Parent and Zhao are grateful for your participation and your helpful responses!
On to the update, and pay attention to a few exciting announcements below! 👀
Why Moms Never Sleep
Sandy Gold | 4 min read
The Story: When many of us have children, many of us expect the sleepless nights to be limited to the first few months or years. Little did we know that sometimes mothers never sleep again until the home is an empty nest.
The Lesson: Sandy talks about the phases of our children’s lives and how the action is nonstop! From the moment our babies are born to when they’re in high school (we all know these teens love oversleeping) to when they step out for college, moms never get a break.
Don’t miss our other stories:
Read the confessions of an introverted mom. Why you shouldn’t distract a child during a tantrum. Should you be putting photos of your children online? A mother shares her concern with feeling resentment with her second child. “I selfishly kept my daughter at 18”—scientifically proven methods (and satire) on how to punish your child.
We’re so excited to announce Modern Parent’s first writing contest, with prizes of $300! Our first competition is open to all participants, and more details will follow later this week. Stay tuned for the announcement of the prizes, guidelines, and prompt!
Our private, invite-only community has been launched! In it, we’ll be chatting about parenting life, making new friends, and finding new ways to support each other’s creative endeavors. We are inviting our first batch of creators, and you can sign up for the waiting list here.
Interested in being a Moderator? Email us to learn more. Otherwise, join the waitlist here.
Modern Parent receives no compensation for the Picks of the Weeks. We make recommendations based on our experiences with the pick of the week and/or a thorough review of a particular vertical.
Sounds of Earth: listen to relaxing ambient sounds of nature around the world
The Sounds of Earth project aims to raise awareness for the protection and restoration of our ecosystems by reminding people of this planet's uniqueness and natural beauties.
With Sounds of Earth, you can listen to the tranquil waterfalls of Japan’s Shiraito Falls, Germany’s Eistobel nature reserve, or the peacetime nighttime in Zambia’s Kafue National Park. We hope these soothing sounds help you and your family reflect on our place in our ecosystem and how we need to continue to preserve our world.
Happy Earth Day! Check out Sounds of Earth here.
Chad Ochocinco, a former star NFL wide receiver, puts his parenting skills on blast
Earlier this weekend, Ochocinco posted a text conversation with one of his daughters. H meant to extol the virtues of hard work and sacrifice, but unfortunately, this seemed to backfire. Many folks on Twitter commented on whether he should be proud of his GPA and whether his children should go through the hardships he did. What did you think of this interaction?
Abby Wambach, retired U.S. women’s national soccer team star, gripes her partner about her children using her stuff.
Check out this hilarious rant from the Olympic soccer player, as she sounded off in a video posted to Instagram Saturday by her wife, Glennon Doyle. “Put it back!!!” is something we must all think to ourselves when our kids take our things without returning them. We see and hear you, Abby. We really do.
We recognize some parents may not be comfortable discussing their circumstances under their real names but may still desire to tell their stories and impart their experiences with the wider parenting community.
If you’re one of those parents, please email us, and as we’ll happily tell your story through Modern Parent. If you email rebecca@modernparent.io, we’ll review your story, and if approved, we’ll post it from our anonymous Modern Parent account and let you know it’s been posted so you can track reactions and responses.
Thank you, Modern Parent Family, and we hope you have a wonderful week!
