Good Dads, Western Parenting, and our Favorite Parenting TikToks (Modern Parent Roundup)
Hello Modern Parents!
Welcome to our weekly round-up. Every Sunday, we feature our stories of the week, parent of the week, and pick of the week. We also share the latest science behind parenting and some entertainment.
Let’s get into it!
My Husband Is a Damn Good Father
Sylvia Emokpae | 7 min read
The Story: Also our Parent of the Week, Sylvia writes about her relationship with her husband and her reflection as a father. As you might tell from the title, she’s pretty proud of him :)
The Lesson: As parents, we have a baseline of expectations that our partners and helpers be responsible guardians. At the same time, we should be proud and “appreciative of people who meet those expectations.” We must celebrate each other more and do it often. Sylvia notes the importance of looking inwardly and channeling our negative energy into positivity and appreciation. Everyone is doing trying to do something damn hard, and we should all acknowledge that.
5 Motivational Brené Brown Parenting Quotes to Change Your Life
Amanda Clark-Rudolph | 5 min read
The Story: Our author rounds up some of the top soundbites from Brené Brown’s new special on Netflix. Brené Brown is a top-selling author and research professor who has written about vulnerability, empathy, and courage, which we can all relate to! However, Amanda directly ties back and relates these quotes with our experiences as parents, making it all the more relatable.
The Lesson: Letting go of what others might think of us (which often happens with an inundation of parenting advice), finding gratitude in ordinary moments, ignoring critics, learning to let our children fail, and being vulnerable as mothers — these are all experiences that we as parents go through, and all areas we can reflect on.
Is The ‘Western’ Way of Parenting Weird?
Jamie D Stacey | 8 min read
The Story: Jamie explores the western parenting style and how it compares to other parenting philosophies and “foreign” styles.
The Lesson: Exploring parenting styles from other parts of the world is a way to add tools to your belt as a parent. Needless to say, no parenting style is superior to the other but educating yourself as a parent on the various styles is a sure way to find the right parenting philosophy for you and your family.

Amanda Gorman’s New Book is Here
Amanda Gorman’s special edition of her inaugural poem was just published this past week. In case you missed it, she delivered the intensely moving poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. With a number of accolades to her name, including the youngest president inaugural poet ever, you’re now able to collect a keepsake that commemorates a momentous event that has transpired in the last year.
For our US friends, you can order a copy of the book here. We highly recommend watching Amanda Gorman’s reading of the poem at the inauguration as well.

We recognize some parents may not be comfortable discussing their circumstances under their real names but may still desire to tell their stories and impart their experiences with the wider parenting community.
If you’re one of those parents, please email us, and as we’ll happily tell your story through Modern Parent. If you email rebecca@modernparent.io, we’ll review your story, and if approved, we’ll post it from our anonymous Modern Parent account and let you know it’s been posted so you can track reactions and responses.
Thank you, Modern Parent Family, and we hope you have a wonderful week!
